The Quarter Horse

More than 300 years ago, the settlers of the United States sought to create an equine race that would bring together the qualities of rapidity of thoroughbred, strength and frugality of native horses or imported from other countries. At that time, one of the most popular hobbies was horse racing over short distances.

By the 1700s, we would run over distances of 440 yards or ¼ mile. These horses, specially bred for short-distance races and capable of very quick start, were named Quarter Miles or Quarter Pathners
